The Canteen

July 11, 2020 By SkiBreck

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Cost: $-$$

The Canteen Breckenridge is one of our favorite spots in Breckenridge, consistently serving up great food and drinks on one of the better patios in town. They have an on-again / off-again relationship with Open Table, so reservation availability is sporadic. This can make the wait time – especially for groups of 4 – a bit long. But, it is definitely worth the wait.

Situated on the North side of Breck, The Canteen has a decent sized bar, two floors of tables, and a large front-side, mountain-facing patio (which is even larger when they block of the parking lot for additional tables). Unfortunately they don’t have heaters on the deck, so winter seating is limited to indoors. During the summer, the indoor seating can get a little warm – the windows all seem to have trouble opening enough to get a breeze flowing. But in the winter, it is a welcome relief from the snow.

Service is always very good at The Canteen – we’ve never had a single issue, problem, or complaint in the many years we’ve been going here.

Family favorites:
Appetizers: We love the charcuterie board, although it has been off the menu since the start of Covid. I ask when it will be back every time we are there, and the unanimous answer is “hopefully soon!” The smoked-then-fried chicken wings are very good too.
Mains: Mac & Cheese is exceptional; personally I do not like it with the added barbecue meat they offer as an add on, but chicken is a great addition. Whatever you do, make sure it has the Cheez-It crackers. Our favorite burger – The Cuban – was taken off during Covid, but it is possible they might be able to pull one together for you if you ask.
Drinks: All of their tin-cup drinks are poured strong; my personal favorite is the Big Ladrewski. They also do shotskis, which is a fun way to enjoy a few shots off a literal ski… multiple different ski lengths available depending on your groups size.

What a ride!

June 8, 2020 By SkiBreck

Well, if you had asked me in January what the season was going to look like, I certainly would have guessed INCREDIBLY wrong! Breckenridge was booming in January, February, and early March… and then that came to a screeching halt. Breckenridge (owned by Vail Resorts), which had been making plans for skiing well into May or even June, suddenly closed for the entire season. Personally, we had both condos fully rented for the remainder of the season including a large trip with our friends – the first in many years. Lots of plans cancelled in the blink of any eye.

Airbnb did the right thing by our mutual guests and quickly implemented a refund program for cancellations from Corona virus. It hit MANY hosts hard to lose their income literally overnight, and many of those hosts have sworn off of Airbnb. But, we think they did the right thing, got money back into the hands of our guests, and while it hurt to lose a big part of our business we’ve weathered the storm.

And now signs of life are creeping back in! Main Street will soon turn into a pedestrian mall with expanded restaurant patios. Bike rentals are open for business, rafting companies are pushing off, and fishing guides are social-distancingly (made up a word) casting their lines. We are excited to see Breck return to some normalcy, and are very excited to get back to work!

Fall Colors

September 9, 2019 By SkiBreck

Breckenridge Fall Colors

Everyone talks about skiing Breckenridge in the winter and escaping to cool weather in the summers. But if you haven’t seen Breck in the fall, you’re missing out.

September and October used to be “downtime” for Summit County. In fact, in 2016/17 many Main Street businesses would close shop for several weeks. But over the last few years, weekends have become busy with front rangers and out-of-towners alike. Wonderful weather with a crisp breeze, beautiful fall colors on the aspens, and the mountain is starting to come alive with all the winter preparations.

What’s on the table for September 2019? Check these out:

  • Breckenridge Oktoberfest: Sept 6 – 8
  • Breckenridge Wine Classic: Sept 12 – 15
  • Breckenridge Film Festival: Sept 19 – 22
  • Breckenridge Strings, Ciders, & Sours: Sept 27 – 29
